Organizer: Hilary Anderson (Event Director)

Following a successful first in-person event this year on the Myrtle Benchlands map in Kimberley, we’re having a similar event in Cranbrook on the Double Duck map. The event is designed to comply with current social distancing recommendations for outdoor sports gatherings in BC. You must be a registered 2021 member of the Kootenay Orienteering Club, and vaccinations please for those 12 and over. There is no fee for club members. To become a 2021 member please click on this link to access KOC 2021 Online Membership Form & Payment.

Please sign up by noon on Thursday October 7, to ensure a map is printed for you. DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 8!

The format is a Score-O: find as many controls as you can in 2 hours (penalties for overtime!). There will be 21 controls. Each control has a score value of 10, 20 or 40 points depending on difficulty or distance. The maximum point score would require fast running and efficient navigating. The goal is enjoyment, so choose your controls and your route between them to suit your own level of expertise and your running or walking speed. You will have 10 minutes before the start to plan your route.

You can run/walk the course individually or with a partner. The map scale is 1:10,000 with 5 m contours. Controls will be marked with orienteering flags and will have SI controls. If you have your own SI stick, please bring it. If not, there will be some available to borrow.

Start Location: Meet at the parking area at Fraggle Rock Trailhead, Cranbrook Community Forest (Eager Hills section) – see map below.

What to bring: watch to keep track of the time, compass (some available to borrow), sturdy running shoes, leg and arm covering, your personal water bottle, refreshments/snacks (we are not able to provide water or refreshments at this time)

Timetable:

9:30: Sign in at the registration desk at the start location. Clear and check your SI stick.

9:50: Maps handed out for route planning.

10:00: Timing begins. Find as many controls as you can in 2 hours.

12:00: Be back at the start. After 12:00 a late penalty of -10 points per minute will apply!
