Map: Kimberley Kettles
Tucked in behind the Trickle Creek Golf Course and Norton/Levirs Ave. is an area of technical orienteering terrain we call Kimberley Kettles. This area was the site of the 2019 BC Champs "forest sprint race". Amazing forest orienteering terrain right in the heart of Kimberley. Lots of trails and lots of cool little depressions and ridges that make orienteering super fun and challenging!
The start of this week's course will be at the corner of Levirs Ave. and Diamond St. Parking will be along the road in the area. Please be mindful of residential driveways and parking areas.
For those newcomers who have attended the past few training sessions the beginner course is perfect for you to put your navigational skills like compass work, attack points and catching features into practice while moving along on the path system. If you complete that, you can head out on the Intermediate course which has some opportunity to cut through the terrain. Any newcomers who have missed some training sessions should meet with Karen and Andree to get up to speed. Be ready to go at 5:30 pm if you want to join the training session so that you have time to get out on a course afterwards! Regular course opening is 6 pm.
The area is small but has a dense area of complex contour features (depressions, hills, knolls, reentrants and spurs). Reading and understanding the contour features will be needed particularly for the Advanced Course where following a path might not always be an option or it will be the "long way" around. All courses will be printed on a 1:5000 which will help with reading the detail. Things will come up quickly !
The weather looks promising for Thursday! We go rain or shine. Dress accordingly.
