Double Duck Fall Training Event TNT
October 5th 2025 11:00am - 2:00pm
Map: Cranbrook Community Forest
I am planning a forest training event for KOC Club members for Sunday Oct. 5 on our amazing Double Duck Map in Cranbrook. This will be a less formal "training event" with small flags and no SI timing. It will start and finish at the Fraggle Rock Parking area off of Hwy 3 (Mountain Bike parking area). Start will be between 11-11:30 am with course closing at 2 pm.
There will be 2 courses offered. Course 1 would be a beginner friendly course, mostly following trails/linear features with controls not far off trail. Course 2 would be for those new members who have stepped up to intermediate level courses in our Spring Orienteering Series. There will be a few more challenging route options in the last 1/2 of this Course 2 that will test your navigation off trail using your compass bearing and reading the big terrain features.
For those new club members looking at joining in the fun at the upcoming BC Orienteering Championships which our club is hosting in Cranbrook/Kimberley over the Thanksgiving Weekend, Oct. 10-13, this Course 1 would be similar to a competition Open Course 2 and this Course 2 would be similar in challenge to a competition Open Course 3/4. NOTE: There will be no Advanced level course for this training day as I want the focus to be for our less experienced club members and most of our key club members are super busy with finishing course planning/logistics etc for the BC Champs!
These courses will take you to some interesting rock/cliff features similar to the terrain you would encounter on the BC Champs long and middle distance events and honestly, the terrain on this map makes orienteers from clubs across Canada envious! Why wouldn't you want take the opportunity to get out there! Even a more informal event like this takes a lot of time and effort, so please come out and enjoy our amazing terrain.
Please contact Karen Martino if you have any questions regarding course choice.
