Biathlon Orienteering & Spring BBQ
June 25th 2026 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Organizer: Karen Martino (Course Planner)
Spring Finale - Biath-O-Lon & BBQ @ Wycliffe Park
Where: Wycliffe Park - Upper Field ( Area 2)
Time: Orienteering & Biathlon Training @ 530pm - Courses Open at 6pm
Followed by BBQ (details below)
Orienteering and Biathlon combined is on the schedule once again.
Before you head out on the course, we will have a brief training sessions on:
- Using the Eco-Aim Optical Rifles
- Using an Orienteering Map & reading map symbols
The course will have you doing both orienteering and using the Eco-Aim Rifles, with penalties for misses. Participants will start with a short loop of orienteering, then come into the range for their 5 shots with the Eco-Aim Rifles, they will do a short penalty loop for each missed shot and then they will pick up the second orienteering map followed by a second trip to the range and then after penalty laps, one final short orienteering loop. Accuracy in the range is definitely beneficial!
The terrain is mostly a mix of open grassy areas with mostly open runnable forest. Some legs on the beginner course will have paths or trails to follow but often cross country travel will be quicker. Knowing how to orient a map and reading the features will be important! The "Orienteering" will be more challenging on the advanced course both in terms of the features selected for the flags and for the navigation required to get from one point to the other. The map is 1:3000 so 1 cm on the map is equal to 30m in the terrain! Things will come up fast! If you run too fast, you risk not being able to read the important details of the map. Knowing where you are on the map and having a good plan on how you are going to travel from one control to the next will be more beneficial than running fast, getting lost and trying to figure out where you are! The distances listed for the 2 courses is the "as the crow flies" distance, so you will be travelling further for sure, particularly if you lose track of where you are on the map.
